I love the feeling and tone of this novel set in the French Quarter during the 1950s. It has a gritty, film noir /detective feel but the protagonist is a teen daughter of a prostitute instead if a detective. Jo finds herself caught in the middle of a murder mystery that threatens to upend her life and close relationships meanwhile, she us desperately trying to get into college and out of New Orleans. The author, Ruta Sepetys, is a great storyteller. There is a motley cast of characters that support Jo because her mother is a disaster. I could feel the danger, the sadness, and the hope of the characters. |
