With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lovely story about a teen struggling to become independent while staying close to her roots. 18 year old Emoni is a young mother and gifted cook trying to find the best way to care for her young child while finishing high school and figuring out her own future. Along the way, Emoni struggles to understand who she is within her family, her school, and all of her responsibilities.

I really enjoyed this storyline and the characters. I felt there were places where the writing could have explored more deeply Emoni’s past and present relationships. In a couple of spots the plot line felt rushed and that the love story wasn’t fully developed.
