This is a perfect, retelling and updated version of one of my favorite books. Zoboi gives Zuri real dimension through her pride of family, culture, and neighborhood. Bushwick is a fun, eclectic backdrop and I enjoyed Zuri’s recounting if the history of this area.
Zuri’s pride is well-placed. She adores the music, food, people. She wants more for her family and sometimes sees them through an imagined lens of the outsider Darcy family.
Darius Darcy is the prideful new neighbor who meddles in the love affair of his brother Ainsley with Zuri’s sister, Janae.
It is fun to watch Zuri change and grow as she is enlightened about the true nature of those around her.
