The Sunflower Sisters by Martha Hall Kelly ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This historical fiction follows three very different protagonists through the civil war. Georgy comes from a wealthy family in New York City and works steadfastly to abolish slavery and help those in need. Jemma is a slave on a plantation in Maryland who experiences the ongoing struggle for freedom and safety for herself and her family from the continuous cruelty of slavery. Anne-May is the new owner of Peeler plantation in Maryland. She is young and cruel and determined to see the South win the war.

This story is very historically true. Author, Martha Hall Kelly clearly researched her topic thoroughly and includes many interesting historical tidbits that I was not aware of. It’s overall a good read with familiar archetypes and has such a ring of truth because so much of it is based on true people and events.

At tines the story could’ve moved quicker and the bad guys are very stereotypical and unsavory while the good guys are willing to learn, change, and help make the world a better place.
