The Dust Bowl. In 1933-34 Texas, Elsa Wolcott Martinelli lives on a farm with her husband, children, and in-laws. After Elsa’s husband leaves the family, the dust storms, lack of resources, and sickness of her so. caused by dust forces Elsa to abandon their home and leave for California with her two children.
Elsa’s resilience and love of her children enables her to do what seems impossible. This story is timeless. Family working together to survive, a mother fighting for her children. This story reminded me of The Grapes of Wrath and The Road while being its own beautifully written entity.
Hannah has done her research and embeds the heartbreaking harshness and reality of this time period while searching for the humanity that remains. The Dust Bowl, the cattle dying, Black Sunday all come to life with the masterful writing of Kristin Hannah.
