Ari is a loner until he meets Dante. Dante teaches Ari to swim and gets Ari to open up. They are friends through the hardships of being a teenager, dealing with family issues, and coming out & coming of age.
It is 1987 in El Paso and Ari is used to keeping to himself. He is angry, frustrated with the family secret that his brother is in prison, and angry with himself for being angry. Dante is outgoing, liked by everyone, helpful, and loves Ari.
This book is lovely, deep, lyrical, and I’m so glad I finally read it.
Lin-Manuel Miranda reads the audible book and I listened to most of it, it is well done. Miranda’s cadence and personality comes through in the reading.
